"A formal definition is given for a measure of the amount of information shared by all the members of a class of patterns. We demonstrate some properties of this measure and illustrate it with several examples. In particular, we show how this measure can be used to provide insight into the patterns of variation in the amino acid sequences of proteins. We also show how the measure can be applied to statistical models of physical processes."
